In today’s article we will present the use of a “John the Ripper” command that allows us to find passwords from a Linux distribution.
If we have access to a distribution and forgot some passwords, we can launch the following commands after you edit and save the contents of the / etc / passwd and / etc / shadow files in two other files, eg. / etc / passwd1 and / etc / shadow1:
# unshadow /etc/passwd1 /etc/shadow1 > to-crack
We will see that a new “to-crack” file will be created that will contain both files edited above and we will use the john command as follows:
# john to-crack
It’s an easy way to use if we “forgot” the passwords in a Linux distribution and we have access to viewing the two / etc / passwd and / etc / shadow files.
